Experience the transition from sheltered pine forest to the vast and powerful Finnmark Plateau — in a comfortable and safe way that suits everyone. Just 30 minutes from Alta town centre, the journey begins at the historic Gargia Lodge, where dense pine forest has sheltered people from the elements for generations. After a welcome to the mountain lodge, we gather inside the traditional Sámi lavvu for an introduction to our history and the postal route that has been vital to this region since the 18th century. You'll then be fitted with all the gear you need — suit, helmet, mittens, boots, and balaclava — before stepping out into the Arctic. From there, the journey continues aboard our specially built snowtrain: a safe and comfortable ride through varied Arctic landscapes. We travel at a leisurely pace up through birch forest, past the treeline and on toward the high plateau. The landscape opens gradually, and suddenly you find yourself standing in what feels like an endless expanse — the mighty Finnmark Plateau. Out here, far from towns and noise, you truly feel the elements. The light, the silence, and the weather create an experience that is different every single day. Your guide shares stories of the natural environment, life on the plateau, and how people have lived in this landscape across generations. Eventually we make our way back to Gargia, where a warm and atmospheric ending awaits inside our traditional lavvu. Around the fire, we serve coffee and locally made pastries — the perfect close to an authentic Arctic experience.

We were very lucky as our group consisted of us and one other couple. Our guide Marion was excellent and we were able to go off on one of the tracks. We were lucky to have a clear night and were able to see the lights and choose when to stop and watch.
the guide rose was amazing, her knowledge and understanding of the area and environment made our day so special she looked after us extremely well could not highly recommend enough

Perfect experience all round! We were lucky enough to have amazing conditions to view the Northern lights during our trip and Vicky was a brilliant guide. We have some wonderful memories and photos to look back on. Would highly recommend.
It was such a great experience to be able to drive a dog sled yourself. We've been told exactly what to do. The guides were totally nice and the dogs were great. It was one of the best experiences in my life and I would book it again and again.
